Ice Melt is friendlier to concrete and wood surfaces, along with vegetation and pets.  Available in a range of concentrations, Ice Melt is typically comprised of Magnesium Chloride and / or Calcium Chloride.  Ice Melt comprised of Magnesium Chloride is very capable in melting ice to negative 13 degrees Fahrenheit.  In contrast, Ice Melters comprised of Calcium Chloride is extremely capable in melting ice in temperatures down to negative 25 degrees Fahrenheit.
